CIMMYT's eastern Africa product pipeline 1A (EA-PP1A) focuses on developing intermediate maturing, white grain, high-yielding maize hybrids that are drought tolerant, NUE, resistant to GLS, TLB, and ear rots, and are suitable for food use in tropical rainfed dry/wet mid-altitude areas in eastern Africa.    General Information
  Adaptation/Agroecological zone 1000 - 1600 masl
  Type of product Three-way cross hybrid
  Year first announced 2017

  Grain Characteristics
      Grain color White
Grain Yield   Grain texture Semi dent
Grain yield under optimum conditions 9.8 t/ha
Grain yield under high density 9.0 t/ha   Biotic Stress Performance
Grain yield under random stress 5.4 t/ha   Turcicum leaf blight (TLB) (1-9) 4.0
Grain yield under low N stress 3.9 t/ha   Grey leaf spot (GLS) (1-9) 2.8
      Common rust (1-9) 3.4
Agronomic Characteristics   Maize lethal necrosis (MLN) under art. inoc. (1-9) 5.4
Maturity 140 DAP   Ear rots 3.2%
Plant height 239.2 cm   Diseases were originally scored on a 1-5 scale but have been converted here to a 1-9 scale, where 1 = Highly resistant; 5 = Tolerant; 9 = Highly susceptible.
Ear height 131.0 cm
Bad husk cover 3.3%
Root lodging 2.2%   Seed Production Characteristics
Stalk lodging 9.0%   Nicking -4.0 Days
Anthesis-silking interval 1.8 Days
Ear aspect (1-5) 2.9   Comments
Plant aspect (1-5) 2.5   Product information is based on data from various trials conducted by CIMMYT in eastern Africa in 2016.

Abbreviations:
art. inoc. = artificial inoculation
DAP = days after planting
GLS = Grey Leaf Spot
HD = High Density (80,000 plants per ha)
Low N = Managed Low Nitrogen
masl = meters above sea level
MSV = Maize streak virus
NUE = Nitrogen Use Efficient
TLB = Turcicum Leaf Blight
Plant and ear aspects are scored on 1-5 scale, where 1 = desirable and 5 = undesirable characteristics
