HP1311

CIMMYT's biofortified PVA maize pipeline focuses on developing high-yielding, nutritious maize hybrids that have orange grain and are drought tolerant, NUE, resistant to GLS, TLB, ear rots, and MSV, and are suitable for food use in tropical rainfed dry/wet mid-altitude areas in southern Africa.   General Information
  Adaptation/Agroecological zone 800-1500 masl
  Region Southern Africa
Type of product Three-way cross hybrid
  Year first announced 2017

  Grain Characteristics
  Grain color orange
      Grain texture Semi-flint
Grain Yield   PVA content 9.9µg/g
Grain yield (MEA) (OPT) 11 t/ha
Grain yield (MEB) (OPT) 7 t/ha   Biotic Stress Performance
Grain yield (MEC) (RS) 5 t/ha   Turcicum leaf blight (TLB) (1-9) 1.7
Grain yield under drought stress 3.5 t/ha   Rust (1-9) 1.0
Grain yield under low N stress (NUE) 2.6 t/ha   Maize Streak Virus (MSV) (1-9) 2.0
Grey leaf spot (GLS) (1-9) 1.6
Agronomic Characteristics   Ear rot  6.8%
Maturity Early   Diseases were originally scored on a 1-5 scale but have been converted here to a 1-9 scale, where 1 = Highly resistant; 5 = Tolerant; 9 = Highly susceptible.
Days to 50% Anthesis 62.8
Anthesis-silking interval 1.2 days
Bad husk cover 0.1%   Seed Production Characteristics
Ear aspect (1-5) 3.1   Female seed yield  14.01 t/ha
Ears per plant 1.1   Male seed yield  2.5 t/ha
Ear height 88.6 cm   Nicking 5 days
Plant height 186.3 cm
Root lodging 7.6%   Comments
Stalk lodging 3.7%   Product information is based on data from the CIMMYT Southern Africa Maize Regional On-Station 2017 Trials. Actual performance will vary depending on a number of agronomic and environmental factors.

Abbreviations:
GLS = Grey Leaf Spot
masl = Meters above sea level
