ZM309

ZM309 is an early-maturing open-pollinated maize variety (OPV) with white grain that is drought-tolerant and NUE, with resistance to GLS, MSV, and TLB, suitable for food use in tropical, rainfed, dry/wet mid-altitude and lowland ecologies in southern Africa and similar agroecologies.    General Information
  Target region Southern Africa
  Adaptation <1800 masl
Type of product Open-Pollinated Variety (OPV)
Year entered in Regional Trials 2007

      Grain Characteristics
Grain Yield   Grain color White
Grain yield ME-A (optimum) 5.38 t/ha   Grain texture Flint
Grain yield ME-A (low N stress) 2.29 t/ha
Grain yield ME-A (disease stress) 6.29 t/ha   Biotic Stress Performance
Grain yield ME-A (random stress) 4.03 t/ha   Turcicum leaf blight (TLB) (1-9)* 3.0

Grain yield ME-B (random stress) 3.34 t/ha   Ear rots 5.3%
Grain yield ME-C (optimum) 4.53 t/ha   *Diseases were originally scored on a 1-5 scale but have been converted here to a 1-9 scale, where 1 = Highly resistant; 5 = Tolerant; 9 = Highly susceptible.
Grain yield ME-C (random stress) 2.17 t/ha
Grain yield ME-C (striga) 1.50 t/ha
      Comments
Agronomic Characteristics   Product information is based on data from the 2014/15 regional trials for Early Maturing OPVs (EPOP15) evaluated at 22 locations under different management conditions in Southern Africa. Actual performance will vary depending on a number of agronomic and environmental factors.

CIMMYT grants licenses to pursue varietal registration of OPVs to qualified public-sector partners. Following successful varietal release in a country, commercial licenses may be issued to private-sector partners by CIMMYT or the varietal registrant on a non-exclusive basis, subject to the terms of the license issued to the varietal registrant.

Private-sector partners interested in commercializing a CIMMYT-derived OPV in a country where the product has not yet been released are encouraged to approach a qualified public-sector partner who may apply to CIMMYT for a varietal registration license.
