ZM721

ZM721 is an intermediate-maturing, open-pollinated maize variety (OPV) with white grain, is drought-tolerant and NUE, resistant to GLS, TLB, ear rots, and MSV, and suitable for food use in tropical, rainfed, dry/wet mid-altitude and transition ecologies in southern Africa and similar agroecologies.    General Information
  Target region Southern Africa
  Adaptation 400-1800 masl
Type of product Open-Pollinated Variety (OPV)
Year entered in Regional Trials 2005

  Grain Characteristics
      Grain color White
Grain Yield   Grain texture Semi-flint
Grain yield under optimum conditions 5.51 t/ha
Grain yield under random stress 2.69 t/ha   Biotic Stress Performance
Grain yield under low N stress 2.9 t/ha   Turcicum leaf blight (TLB) (1-9)* 5.0
Grain yield under MSV stress (ai) 4.7 t/ha   Grey leaf spot (GLS) (1-9)* 3.4
Maize Streak Virus (MSV) (1-9)* 1.0

Days to 50% anthesis 66   Ear rots 6.3%
Plant height 169.4 cm   Diseases were originally scored on a 1-5 scale but have been converted here to a 1-9 scale, where 1 = Highly resistant; 5 = Tolerant; 9 = Highly susceptible.
Ear height 89.4 cm
Ear Position (0-1 ratio) 0.46
Root lodging 14.7%   Comments
Stalk lodging 17.0%   Product information is based on data from the 2011/2012 Regional Trials for Intermediate to Late Maturing Populations from CIMMYT evaluated at 25 locations in Southern Africa (ILPOP12). Actual performance will vary depending on a number of agronomic and environmental factors.

CIMMYT grants licenses to pursue varietal registration of OPVs to qualified public-sector partners. Following successful varietal release in a country, commercial licenses may be issued to private-sector partners by CIMMYT or the varietal registrant on a non-exclusive basis, subject to the terms of the license issued to the varietal registrant.

Private-sector partners interested in commercializing a CIMMYT-derived OPV in a country where the product has not yet been released are encouraged to approach a qualified public-sector partner who may apply to CIMMYT for a varietal registration license.

Abbreviations:
